Gait Analysis
Gait or running analysis at the Community Orthopedic Rehabilitation clinic involves two stages. First you will be evaluated by a physical therapist for your flexibility and strength. This will be done in the clinic looking at all parts of the body involved in your walking or running activities. This part evaluates your flexibility and joint motion as well as balance and functional strength. Second you will be evaluated on a treadmill and we will monitor the way you move, looking in particular at your feet, ankles, knees, hips and torso. This will then be relayed to a laptop where slow motion and freeze frames can be used to carefully assess your running or walking style. Many injuries are often caused, at least in part, by poor biomechanics. Often restrictions in motion, flexibility or loss of functional strength can also cause an improper gait. We may have suggestions for correcting the problem causing these biomechanical problems. Runners and athletes whose sports require a high level of running and jumping should make sure they have had a gait analysis to avoid future overuse injuries or other pain conditions. The following are a list of common injuries or conditions associated with and/or causing poor gait biomechanics.
- Plantar Fasciitis
- Iliotibial Band Syndrome
- Patellar Tendonitis or Tendinosis
- Achilles Tendonitis or Tendinosis
- Lower crossed Syndrome
- Chronic Hamstring or groin injuries
- Lower Back Pain
- Patello-femoral Syndrome
- Shin Splints
